Those are the reported figures, I think the only figure that can be almost trusted is sadly the numbers of death. About 30% of those onboard the ship in Tokyo picked up the virus, even though strong quarantine conditions were in place, better than those in Hubei/China. How can they contain below that level in China?


Reasons for under reporting
System is maxed out testing people with and without the virus
People are staying at home, either afraid to be isolated in large camps, overcrowded and infectious hospitals, or not seeking medical because it is "just" the flu, and want to ride out at home.
Isolation of news agencies and independent reporting
China reputation, seen it many times in the past.

Future when travel restrictions lift, the spread will rise even more, other countries as well. Can't seal China off until 0 cases. The policies at the moment are buying time, keeping numbers lowish so hospitable can cope in most countries. I really don't see this being snuffed out because it is reasonably contagious, reports have virus surviving for long period on surfaces, and low or no immunity in the general population, unlike most other flus.
