In times of great financial crisis

1) The rich get a little poorer but survive comfortably and
live to fight another day, where they will in the near
future recoup any losses they may have had, and become
wealthier than they ever were.

2) The middle class gets hammered the most, and after a
lifetime of toil and struggle, become poor, where they
will have to continue to toil and struggle to lift
themselves back to where they were before the crisis.

3) The poor stay poor. They and their families lose any
hope of ever lifting their lot to a higher level.
