The annual Diggers and Dealers Mining Forum in Kalgoorlie will be rescheduled to October because of the coronavirus crisis.
Organisers of the event, which attracts more than 2000 delegates from the WA and the national mining sector, decided today that the three-day event historically held in early August would be put back to October 12, 13 and 14.
“With our focus being on the safety and health of delegates, and the increasing uncertainty around large events, we believe that moving the Diggers and Dealers Mining Forum to 12, 13, and 14 October 2020 is the responsible action to take,” they said in a statement released this afternoon.
“By moving the event out of the winter period, we believe we are allowing more time for authorities to assess information and guide our decision making.”
Fears were held that the event might have to be cancelled owing to the growing coronavirus spread in Australia, the Federal Government’s ban on gatherings of more than 500 and its traditional scheduling at the peak of the annual flu season.
October was decided because the temperature is typically warmer in Kalgoorlie then that in August, the Goldfields Arts Centre was available and it is before the annual AGM season.
Organisers said they needed to schedule a date because of lead times and logistics associated with holding the event in Kalgoorlie.
“We also want to provide reassurance that we are committed to supporting the Goldfields community, resources industry and our suppliers,” they said.
“We have consulted with industry colleagues for their input on this decision. Their full support has been provided given the measures the broader mining community has implemented and are planning to implement if necessary.”
“Please be assured that we will continue to monitor the situation closely and work to recommendations made by global and local health authorities.”
