I read an article by Pilger years ago, called the "myth-makers", about the lead-up to the '91 Gulf War.
He documented therein, with references, that Saddam really believed he had the express permission of the US, per Madeleine Albright, to invade Kuwait. I read the article in detail and could not fault it. There are lots of "not so silly" people who believe Saddam was "set up".
