In reality, this is not that straight forward. In order to prove a drug is effective is generally a long and (often expensive) process.

Firstly, the sample size of that study in the news is very small, with only 40 people, which means its statistical significance is questionable. Also, it doesn't tell what is the selection criteria of patients? Are they all within a particular age group (young vs older patients, patients with other comorbidities?)

Secondly, this is not a double-blinded study, which means placebo and demand characteristics effects can affect the objectivity of the study (i.e. bias).

It is very dangerous to assume something is effective in treating a medical condition without a systematic and evidence-based practice, just like in older days Temporal lobectomy (surgical removal of part of the brain) was used for treating epilepsy...
