Unfortunately, the soldiers in the US military are poor shiites who mostly live in the outback with little or no connection to the major cities. That outback replaces nationalism and extreme xenophobia for food...
So the city folk go on about their daily mundane routine without knowing what's going on anywhere except in their bedroom... and even that is taking place in the dark.
