IF a creative force, spiritual essence, god, exists, then as the, First Cause it would be unknowable, simple because it would be external to the product of its cause.

As for knowing or not knowing if this God exists, it comes down to one's perception of the conditions and exactitude of physical existence, because neither religion, nor science has provided definitive answers regarding those pesky big questions. So it is still appropriate to believe in a Cause of causes, so long as such a belief does not attempt to override what has been proven by science, or until proven otherwise by science.

Belief in something is hardwired, spirituality is hardwired. It's a fundamental human condition. The best we can do is channel these kinds of beliefs into positive outcomes, tangible service to humanity, not faith, not preaching or excesses of ritual and Churchianity.
