Any new currency, not backed in some measure by gold, will have a difficult time in gaining acceptance and bringing about stability. It will be viewed as another 'smoke and mirrors' attempt.
People won't be easliy duped.
Only a 'new' currency backed somehow, in some way (not too sure how) by gold will have any chance of winning global acceptance and confidence.
Desperate times need desperate measures - gold has historically been seen as an intrinsic store of value and is indeed the currency of last resort.
That said, I don't think it will happen - but gold will continue to act as a defacto currency.
