That wasn't on the table when people decided to travel overseas, so it is a valid criticism to make of the government for lots of reasons.
The thread OP premise is about who should pay for those held by the government in hotels.
As in my sisters case, she had made arrangements to self isolate for 14 days on her return (zero cost to the government), the government reneged on the conditions imposed on her traveling at the time. (Ergo, the government should pay.)
No one is asking for your sympathy, just pointing out that her decision was reasonable at the time because she planned responsibly to protect others on her return.
So trying to demonize people for a political decision is illogical.
