Actually, I forgot a couple things. I was half watching the show Roswell New Mexico, you know, those handsome aliens are kind of distracting
Anyway...
1. Usually, with pneumonia, only part of one lung becomes affected. Most often, this is the lung on the right side. That means that usually parts of the lungs remain fully functioning. However with covid-19, both lungs can be completely affected. The entire system. Hence the rapid decline in the host and the need for artificial aid in breathing (ventilator etc) so that the body receives oxygen and the organs can still function.
2. Unlike allergens (pollen or dust etc), a virus like covid-19 replicates inside us. It attaches to the host's cell, penetrates it, replicates and eventually destroys the host cell. And it can replicate very fast, overcoming the immune system. It begins in the nose, mouth, larynx. For many people, that's as far as it gets. If however it moves lower into the lungs, then we have a problem.
So, in a serious case, covid-19 is like a war between an invading virus which is replicating and destroying cells vs an overactive immune system which is trying to destroy the virus but may also destroy the host. And if either side wins, then the host can die.
What concerns us here is that the intention of introducing stem cells to the body is to reset the way the immune system works to make it act in a more calm and effective way - the way it is intended to act. It's about (we hope) giving the body the best chance to fight the virus but not let the host damage itself in that fight. The damage that SI refers to is the damage that the host can do to itself - the introduction of stem cells does not cause damage.
Whether stem cells end up being the best solution for everyone is unknown. And this is why we need trials. And this is why we need to be patient.
.
As I said earlier, I am not a doctor, I am just a patient who has had immune issues all my life.
My words are an expression of my limited understanding, please correct me if I am wrong.
