Surfers Paradise is steeling itself for a violent Christmas due to an expected influx of Lebanese gang members from Sydney. One nightclub proprietor yesterday described gang members as "terrorists", while police confirmed they were investigating reports of Sydney crime syndicates trying to muscle in on the Gold Coast's lucrative entertainment industry. The concerns have been heightened by a series of incidents on the Gold Coast involving gangs in the past month. Four members of a suspected Lebanese gang were arrested last week with a loaded handgun and 5100 ecstasy tablets. It is understood the men all had tattoos of a gun on their forearms, indicating gang membership. One of the men was a member of a family that is allegedly involved in the vicious feud in Sydney that has claimed five lives over four months after a series of high-profile attacks, including drive-by shootings. In another incident, a suspected gang member was questioned by police after being found covered in blood outside a Surfers Paradise nightclub. The man had a stab wound to the shoulder, but declined to make a complaint to police. Queensland Police Minister Tony McGrady told The Australian 22 people of "Middle Eastern appearance" had been arrested on 25 different charges on the Gold Coast since November 1.
