What you are saying is pretty true when talking about secular bear markets, however it isn't correct for cyclical bears. While no one can be certain whether this is a secular or cyclical bear, the fact is we bottomed(so far at least) the day the US states started locking down. The reason is that then put a reasonably defined time line on how long the virus issue would last. My opinion is we've seen the low, while we may retest or even slightly undercut it, I don't think we're going to see another major leg down. Months of sideways chop the most likely scenario for the index while it grinds out a base and during this time the new market leaders will make some big moves
Having said that, my opinion doesn't influence the way I approach trading/investing, I take on small amounts of risk and only add more once my stops are raised so I'm protected if my opinion turns out to be wrong.
