The emergency take over in the two SA interconnect failures was instructive. While the AEMO could block Lake Bonney from discharging to the grid, they couldn't stop it charging the battery, and indeed drew on the battery from time to time. Remarkably, they managed to keep the Portland smelter going throughout.
The East Australian grid is the longest in the world and very fragile. The strength batteries provided makes the regulators very keen for more storage. The CEFC would be inclined to be helpful with cheap finance, If they can get past the Luddite minister Angus Taylor.
These emergencies should (!) lessen as the grid is strengthened with SA-NSW link, more capacity on NSW-QLD, NSW-VIC and a second Vic-TAS.
No word from IFN on next steps. I think there is plenty going on there behind closed doors. The pandemic and lower energy prices will discount price expectations for second-hand WFs, though there is no evidence IFN will jump that way. Not many businesses have ready cash right now. IFN is one of the few.
