The price of phosphate has soared in recent years. It has risen from $US45 per tonne in 2005 to about $US450 a tonne at present. Almost 90 per cent of phosphate is used in fertilisers, and the remainder in industrial and feed phosphates. Mainland Australia only has one phosphate mine, that being Incitec Pivot's Phosphate Hill mine in Queensland's Georgina Basin. However, Phosphate Australia, Minemakers and Legend International all hope to develop phosphate mines in the same part of Australia
