If they stop drilling new wells the production will start to decline fairly quickly.
Depletion rates on unconventional wells are huge.
The well starts off with high pressure and hence high daily flow rates but within 2 months these rates quickly drop and continue to decline to a much lower stable rate which then also eventually drops to uneconomic levels.
