SOL has a much more concentrated portfolio than an ETF so your really backing the management teams judgement on the long term prospects of 6-7 different businesses rather than 200 or whichever index your ETF is based upon. They take an ultra long term approach with cyclical businesses and also take great pride in slowly lifting their fully franked dividend each year. It's an interesting debate but in times like these I would probably say SOL is a more conservative option than buying the ASX 200 index but that's just my opinion.
