in 2015, i was there in Sapa & Lao Cai when the oil platform incident broke out. That was probably one of the reasons prompting Joey Lim quickly change direction and bought Star Vegas as a hedge. Lao Cai border was shut for those few weeks, but in the end it re-open, and Chinese keep coming.. There's always been anti-chinese sentiment in Vietnam for the past 1000 years.. in 1979 Chinese PLA cross the border over to Lao Cai, the local still have nightmare from that incident till this day. However, that does not stop them from welcoming Chinese tourists to Sapa or trade movement.

They’re waiting for Chinese tourists to come back. Chinese tourists make up 1/3 of international visitors in Vietnam for the past 3 years. That trend is likely to increase, as it will now be more difficult for Chinese tour groups to travel outside of Asia. For the next couple of years.
