pennyo, you have made an assumption that there are all these vacant houses for the renters to buy. at the moment we have a shortage of new housing stock so there is a substition effect renters move into formally rented homes reducing the stock of avaialble for rent, hence the strong demand for rentals and the rents. This is based on the low vacany rates.
