You miss the point entirely.

All it takes is only a few hundred thousand extra people, out of tens of millions of new car buyers, globally, to decide on an EV next year, to push that balance the other way.

Perhaps they will be those in China or similar locations, where they have seen and felt what it's like to actually have relatively clean air and blue skies lately? Have you been to such countries and actually experienced what constant filthy smog and pollution is actually like...? It only needs an extra fraction of a percent of buyers to shift the balance.
IMO that is hardly a far-fetched concept, and actually pretty damn likely.
