If I was a car manufacturer, I'd outsource the battery issues to the battery makers, and focus on the other aspects of making a great car. I'd let the battery makers worry about procuring the necessary metals to make the battery. If I wanted to get into manufacturing the batteries, for whatever reason, I'd assume that within about 15 years, most of the materials will come from recycling of spent batteries, and not from under the ground. I'd also like to be free of the baggage that will come from any future changes in battery chemistry, that may completely change which metals are needed. I'd stay away from the mining business, either directly, or indirectly through financing commitments. Scandium, for the car body, would probably interest me more than nickel and cobalt, and maybe copper, necessary for components not having to do with the battery. Just my completely non expert hit on the matter.
