Actually not such a crazy idea - just not perhaps in the way that you initially thought!
How about some turbine/blade style stabilisers that are used as generators, exploiting the natural surging and rocking action of a ship in rough seas?
Sure it wouldn’t provide all the required power but could certainly, IM(engineering)O, provide significant range extension!!
