The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is asking you about options to buy Cannabidiol (“CBD”, a medicinal component of cannabis) without a prescription, in a medicine such as a liquid or oil, tablet or capsule. The public consultation is NOW OPEN and CLOSES this Friday May 22.
PLEASE RESPOND BY THIS FRIDAY TO MAKE YOUR VOICE COUNT!
People like to try CBD to help minor issues - eg. mild pain, anxiety, stress, as well as general health benefits. An Australian Senate Inquiry recommended that the TGA consult the public on how YOU want to access CBD, because of a strong public plea to be able to buy it legally and at low cost.
The World Health Organization has also recommended that CBD should be “removed from international drug control” - because it is medicinal but isn’t “psychoactive” (mind-altering).
For CBD to become widely available for sale to the public, the Government - via the TGA - must be comfortable that the product is safe and that risk to public health and safety is acceptable. Like other medicines you can buy, the dosage, labelling, and claims must help people use it safely and prevent accidental harm or misuse.
There are two different proposals on the TGA website - Option A (suggested by the TGA) & Option B (suggested by a private person). A “hybrid” proposal combining these ideas, Option C, has been published by Complementary Medicines Australia. The stated goal of this “hybrid” option is to provide widely available, low cost, high quality CBD to the public under the right conditions. Many existing Australian manufacturers would be able to produce CBD if permitted by the Government with required TGA safety, manufacturing and labelling conditions.
A potential benefit of Option C is that people would be able to access it easily in stores, at a lower cost, for only low risk claims that the Government will decide for CBD. It could also be accessed through any trusted healthcare professional. People may even be able to report their own effects to Australian researchers so that more is learnt about the benefits of CBD along the way. This could help to free up important research funding to be put towards other types of medicinal cannabis for treating more kinds of health conditions.
