With respect I think you are overestimating some doctors ability to explain things, to display empathy and compassion, even tact, and also underestimating some people's life long beliefs or faith....it also depends on the state of the patients mind ...are they willing to fight ...the will to live is such a powerful thing in itself. Is that person willing to try something new or are they more of the mind frame ok i'm on my way out and I'm ok with that? ...and simply some people trust their faith or beliefs more than their doc or have a combination of all the above ...it's a powerful part of life and death and treatment for life threatening conditions.

I am unfortunately very well versed on making such decisions ...not just for myself but also for other family members. I am intelligent enough to assess what I'm hearing, weigh it up, and to make a call taking into account wishes...some people it's the first time they've ever come across such a situation ...it's easy to say oh they'd do this or they'd do that whilst talking about it on a discussion board ...much harder when it's real.

I was mentally, physically, and spiritually prepared for the fight on my life when it came to my life. I answered the call and I fought with ever fibre of me being ...because I didn't want to go out with my family and friends thinking she never tried ...I wanted to go out with them proud that I did everything I could to stay and if I didn't make it that they at least had the consolation that I gave it my all. However some people just aren't of that mind set some just don't have that fight for a million and one reasons known only to them ...I have a very good understanding on that too....sometimes the cure is worse than the disease so to speak. I've seen many family members tackle battles their own way ...and you know what that's ok too ...because to have any treatment or not is an individual choice . Risk vs Reward

You can apply that to investing in bio tech ...high risk high reward but it ain't guaranteed and no it's not for the faint of heart.
