R.I.P. "Free and fair" markets.
Admittedly ASIC is undersourced (i've heard some absolute horror stories from ppl working there in relation to low pay, satisfaction, etc).
How about some of that $10bn being "pumped" into the economy going towards ENFORCEMENT? The proper regulation of existing laws to promote confidence is fundamental to ensuring that the investors that are left do not flee the market.
It's situations such as this that undermine investor confidence and ensure that investors - long term or short - will not be returning to the equity market soon.
Glad to see that the mainstream media has picked up on the points discussed on the forum... hopefully it will ensure greater scrutiny now and for the immediate future regarding directors' duties and due diligence.
