you're right the electorate doesn't care, nor does K Rudd care to answer the question himself (why is that).
Perhaps international leaders care a bit more than voters, and will be a tad cautious in their discussions in case they're made mileage out of.
If I had a private discussion with you and then posted it here and mocked you it would be poor form. This is no different except the stakes are much much higher.
