That's true. I have lived in a country where the social cost (taxes and others) is lower and with higher income inequalities. In comparison to Oz, I have found that what I avoided in taxes I paid in increased private security costs, increased private healthcare and generally a heightened sense of awareness due to higher rates of anti social behaviour arising from higher proportions of disenfranchised youth. In conclusion, I have come to the position that if it takes a higher rate of tax to reduce these social frictions and enhance the enjoyment of freedoms, I am all too happy for it. And the added benefit of the probability that that tax might enable a few more people to get out of poverty is not so bad after all.
