During a recent webinar, I asked Ronen whether FLC has completed a Nirobox with solar. His answer was no. But he would certainly to try and it would be a very interesting project.
Solar technology is definitely there. So what is stopping it? Off the top of my head, there are many questions. Who bears the risk if there is insufficient sunlight and power and the desal plant fails to deliver the targetted amount of potable water? The BOO? And if they were to mitigate that risk by building a power generator plant as standby, wouldn't that add to the total cost of ownership, cancelling any power cost savings from solar? Add to the fact that these desal plants are needed in remote locations, what would the added cost of maintenance be? Good on paper. But poor on economics.
