    hiwayman,

I know what there is to Cougar, I work for them sometimes, and my company does all their geological work. :) Their only 'very large' deposit is the Thar in Pakistan, but that's not in Qld (obviously).

    ff,

It doesn't matter what criteria you use to compare them, 80-odd million tons by no stretch of the imagination qualifies as 'very large.' A large coal mining operation will mine 20-30 million tons per year, which is why I pointed out that a decent-sized mining operation would mine out Cougar's deposits in a few years.

Kogan Creek power station is running a 750MW burner, and they have at LEAST 100 years' worth of coal there without even breaking 100m in depth. And that's not even what I'd call a VERY LARGE deposit. It's only a few hundred million tons - still several times larger than Kingaroy.

Take, for example, Waratah Coal's deposit in the Galilee Basin. They're looking at 10 BILLION tons of mineable coal, and maybe 100 billion extra tons of UCG-suitable coal.

Now THAT is what I call a very large coal deposit!

I'm not disparaging Cougar with this post, what they have is suitable for what they need. But you need to keep things in perspective. Kingaroy is a relatively small fish as far as Qld coal deposits go.

    Cheers,
