Quixis, what l mean by that is largely dependent on how low shorters believe the price can go before they have to cover. With any stock that's had a prolonged downward trend, the longer the trend goes the closer it gets to ending that trend and reversing. When and if that happens to FMG remains to be seen, but the beginning of a downward trend is the safest time to sell short. Your point on percentage gains is valid however the enemy to any short seller is the sudden reversal.
