Cat - its drugs - in particular Ice or 'P' as its called in NZ. Now in close to epidemic proportions in a subsector of NZ society. I spent alot of my young life in NZ - it is such an alien place to me now because of the level of drug-dependence and violence. I grew up a in a pretty comfortable middleclass household - friends were the same. Two of them are Ice addicts now and are unreachable mentally. Their spirit and soul has evaporated and i fear its permanent. That and the reluctance/ lack of resources of the police to tackle the prevalent gang culture in NZ (responsible for alot of the drug trade). God's Own 'Warrior nation' is on the path to hell atm.
