The structure of existing executive reward schemes makes it virtually impossible to link the amount of total remuneration received by executives to the level of wealth that has been created for shareholders as a result of their actions. This is because neither the metrics themselves, nor the hurdles attached to them, typically bear any relationship to the level of performance required to conserve wealth for shareholders, let alone create it. In this paper, we demonstrate how the performance expectations embedded in a company’s share price define what the capital markets expect in order to conserve wealth, and propose a new approach to executive remuneration that both encourages and rewards ongoing shareholder wealth creation.
