Decades of sexist shows, such as Benny Hill, have died through disgust at the view of women in past times. Recently watching Monty Python I was disturbed by the sexism that was "acceptable" in the 60s.

This is such an ethical issue that is fraught with accusations of political correctness. Yet given eh history, PC is not an appropriate name for these sorts of changes. IMO its social maturing in which "we" will no longer tolerate the old values which laughed at the dumbing down of stereotypes and the "demonstrations" of how right, smarter, better White Males are than everybody else.

All very contentious as transition periods often are. But do Australians now think that the slavery that was common 200 years ago is appropriate and right? Do we think that women should not have the right to vote? or own property? have no access or control of the children in a divorce as it was only 100 years ago? Should First Nations people have no vote or not be counted in the census?

All these matters, now generally accepted as inappropriate, were contentious during the phases of transition. So too portrayals of Chinese, Aboriginal (black face) etc by Chris Lilley... but then his sketches always had me squirming with the cringe factor of his shows.

    Scott.
