Shorters do have an effect.
I would suggest that shorters in driving a price down on the day trigger margins and stop losses.
Even if they then cover they have caused the stock to fall and its very unlikely those being forced out on the day will rebuy at that point.
I also think the reported shorts for the day are at close, so, any action during the day by shorters would be unreported
