R-Boat is that 1.7Tr of hedge fum unleveraged money????? If it is, we are unlikely to see much more unwinding if the 'real money' pot has nearly halved already........ there will be a redistribution of funds and hedge funds big (and small surviving ones) will have to lower leverage...... just as Goldman and co have had to seek banking statute protection and do the same......... the big hedge fund 'feeders' of the past decade or so (texas teachers, robeco, ubs asset man, putnam, intessa, calpers, haravard etc etc etc) will want to put their money to work somehow........ there is no use being a real money manager (a long guy) and watchibng a bear mkt unfold for 2 years.... you need to be flexible and have some shortside risk execution ability......... there's been a rush to the exits from the 'nouveau-riche' who found ways to invest in funds like Platinum and retail focused managers who lived on the promise of great returns (or better than GIO anyway)...... these people are leveraged and cannot afford to pay the big boys game any more with 500k or a couple of mills parked in 'alternative assets'........ but the big boys will be already starting to want to commit some capital just so as not to miss opportunities........ the overall leverage will be lower one feels and the bet sizes diminished for a time....... but notwithstanding the horrific markets of late, just remember not everyone has done their brass and there will be still be a yield chase on................ and thus comes the top for the US$..............
