A long term pattern (though not much of one) seems to be long plateaus then a spike then pull back to the next plateau. Here's one chart from wikipedia with CPI indexing. Perhaps $50 is not a bad equilibrium price taking inflation into account. Trading long plateaus isn't much fun though.
