The majors want very large long life projects in a commodity with good pricing power and low sovereign risk. I cant think of a project in Australia that fits the bill better than Woonarah. I'm sure they'd get a good deal on investing in a rail link between Mt Isa - Tennant Creek since its part of an existing national infrastructure plan, and the gas developments in the NT would also be attractive for a DAP plant. I think the NT govt made a mistake not making the Japs reserve some of the gas from the Impex LNG project for the local market, very dumb.
The majors are interested in phosphate, Vale is the second largest miner in the world and investing in a phosphate project in Peru that is no more advanced than Woonarah.
Rio has to negotiate with 3 local governments just to drill their Potash tenements in Argentina, its a nightmare and dont be suprised if they walk away.
