Government to announce permanent dole increase

Unemployment payments are set to rise by $75 a week as part of reforms to the post-pandemic economy.

The permanent boost will take the base rate from $565 dollars to $715 dollars each fortnight.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg is expected to unveil the changes when he hands down the government's mini-budget in July.

The budget will mark the next phase of the government's economic response to the coronavirus crisis.
