I'd assume international trading to be a decent sized market relative to domestic (I'd guess 20-50% the size), but I think rip-off brokerage costs from big banks would be limiting people's trading.
A lot of people are members of Commsec, but would be unwilling to pay $19.95 to 0.31% brokerage, plus 0.6% FOREX spread for US shares.
If instead they were members of SWF and then saw that international trading is fairly cost effective, there might be higher take-up.
