The problem I have with that theory is that if you're a central bank, you dump gold to keep your currency strong.
OK, so who (apart from Iceland and Russia) wants a stronger currency at the moment? Nobody - it's a competitive devaulation, race to the bottom, beggar-thy-neighbour environment.
