This may effect Zoono’s PR a little locally, but is really an issue with Zafe Zone, who have simply infringed on clear advertising criteria around coronavirus. You're just not allowed to say your sanitiser is effective against Coronavirus (covid-19) in any marketing material or on labels even if it is. If you do it, you’ll get fined.

Zoono sent out letters to the fact on two occasions (that I know of) to distributors & white labellers to say this is not acceptable practice and only claims against the Covid-19 (feline) surrogate have been ok’d.

I do Personally think Zafe Zone is being a little tricky with its wording now though. By saying its a “Cosmetic” product & does not require TGA approval, (when TGA doesn’t actually approve any hand sanitisers), then saying it contains the same active ingredients as Z71 (which is listed on TGA’s list of approved disinfectants for use against Covid-19), not sure about that.

I’ll give Zafe Zone the benefit of the doubt and say it was just an honest, but costly, mistake to make coronavirus claims on the hand sanitiser. They haven’t hurt anyone here.

You do make an interesting point on a weird grey area around cosmetics, chemicals, disinfectants, etc. in regards to Zoono products. In Oz Its not listed as a (NICNAS) registered chemical (due to minimal concentrations in a Water base), which means its classed more or less as a cosmetic. This is important for a safety classification. Its clearly used as a disinfectant/Sanitiser but safe enough to be classed as a cosmetic. This might be one of the wonderful things about the product.

Maybe someone out there with more technical understanding can comment on this.

As a final note; Zoono’s Germfree24 Hand & Z-71 Microbe Spray are proven effective against Covid-19 surrogate. TGA acknowledged this for Z-71 as acceptable, but not for the Hand sanitiser because they just don’t do that for hand sanitisers.
