If you invested $US50k in gold in 1900, and cashed it in today, you would have around $US2,042,912.
If instead you invested $US50k for a modest return of, say, 5% pa, you would have accumulated $US9,714,363.00.
If you were more cautious and invested at only 4% pa, you would end up with $US3,455,975.00.
Then if you just put it in a savings account at 3% pa, you would have ended up with $US1,217,280.00.
But if you buried $US50k in the backyard, you'd probably end up with nothing because the mice would have used it for nesting material :)
