Short answer is that China is currently a net exporter of food.

But one of the strategic threats to China is the likely environmental collapse in large areas of the country: land degradation, desertification, loss of reliable water supply, contamination with industrial waste, air pollution, silting of river systems.

There is also the more well known increasing wealth of the Chinese which will increase demand.
