May 2020 – German Patient Safety Award goes to the Charité Ultrasound Center
Under the direction of Professor Dr. med. Thomas Fischer has successfully succeeded in the interdisciplinary ultrasound centre of the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin to reduce the risk of possible infection transmission during ultrasound examinations and thereby further increase patient safety. In order to solve a long-known and much-discussed problem, the conversion of manual wipe disinfection to the use of trophon2 has led to an automated and validable disinfection system for ultrasonic probes in the semi-critical area. For this innovative measure, the Patient Safety Action Alliance has announced on 19 May 2020 the team's teaching and research coordinator, Dr. med. Markus Lerchbaumer, awarded second place at the German Prize for Patient Safety in the amount of EUR 6,000. Especially in times of the COVID-19 pandemic, the prize confirms the urgent clinical need to implement solutions for standardized infection prevention according to the current state of science and technology.®
Nanosonics congratulates the Interdisciplinary Ultrasound Center of the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin for second place at the German Prize for Patient Safety. This award confirms by an independent jury of experts from the medical profession, nursing, pharmacy, self-help and payers that a machine-, standardized treatment procedure offers significant advantages for patient safety compared to a manual procedure. "A long-known gap in hygiene, for which there was no solution available to the practitioners on site, is being closed in a practical way," praises Dr. med. Ruth Hecker, Chairwoman of the Jury and the Board of Directors of the Patient Safety Action Alliance. As a result, trophon2 sets new standards for the disinfection of ultrasonic probes with a validable, demonstrably effective and digitally documented process and thus makes an important contribution to infection prevention worldwide.
