Buffet was aways a bit negative on gold, I seem to remember it was because he didn't think it provided a return in the conventional way of investing in a company. This buy of Berkshires signals to me one of 2 scenarios, he's done his homework and is genuinely bullish for all rational reasons or he knows about a political /economic shitstorm that is around the corner, or both!!
