Abbott should never have repealed the MRRT because it would have in effect raised the price for China's imports of iron ore & coal before
alternative sources were found. This by now would have netted the Government about $20 billion.
Those at the time said that the MRRT would drive China to develop and seek supplies elsewhere. Since relations have soured with the Australian Government and China two years ago, China has been investing in alternate supplies particuluarly Mongolia, Russia & South America and
Chinese resource development capital here has virtually dried up.
In summary our Government has done with its mouth what its predecessor Abbott Government said the MRRT would do; that is drive Chinese resource capital investment elsewhere and thanks to Abbott , we now have diddly squat!.
IMO we should have used Chinese capital (not allowed Chinese equity) to industrialise by processing our minerals onshore thereby breaking our Chinese economic dependance. But I guess we would have needed to import a few Singaporeans to do that for us ..eh?
