Fixator, it is possible and relatively cheap to buy motherboards with dual or even triple PCI Express slots thus allowing multiple video cards. Usually each video card has 2 outputs so anything up to 6 monitors can be done run easily using standard hardware.
There are also some "workstation" cards out there that will run 4 monitors but from the looking I have done, they aren't that fantastic in the bang for buck department.
