This is just my own list of shops and businesses that I feel will struggle.
I think it will be the same the world over.
In the UK, about 5 or 6 major chains have collapsed in the past few weeks.
Waterford Wedgwood being a classic example.
It sells expensive things that people can certainly do without and quite obviously are doing without.
This company has been around for 300 odd years.
The spending spree is over and we have way too many shops.
Take a look around.
I have 7 bedding stores within 5 klms of my home.
I have Captain Snooze on one side of the road and 40 Winks on the other.Harvey Norman (also sells beds) is 500 metres down the road. The Bed shed is literally a few klms up the same road. The Bed barn is a few klms away in the new Homemaker centre. The Good guys are about 3 klms up the road as well.
We are saturated with shops.
In regards to Pubs and restaurants,I was not having a go at them.I love pubs and restaurants and have done my level best over the years to support them.
My point is that 'stealth inflation' has lead to costs that can no longer be supported.
Many folks are expecting inflation, some folks even expect hyperinflation,I think we have had inflation over the past 10 to 15 yrs.Everything is too expensive these days. The margins people put on all types of goods and services can easily be justified. The problem is that they are pricing themselves out of the market.
I remember when Cauliflowers hit $6 each.I stopped eating cauliflowers.
Some things we can choose to buy or not to buy.
Pub meals and restaurant meals are becoming prohibitively expensive.
As are lots of goods and services.
It is not the fault of the publican that meat is expensive and wages are high, but that's not the point.
People will find cheaper alternatives(Vietnamese as an example)
During a boom people can afford everything.
Now people have to choose how they spend their money ( a real eyeopener for anyone who hasn't lived thru tough times before).
Some things we can not do without,so it is the discretionary items that have to go,thus the list in the original post.
