    Here's a game changer

    Scientists have developed an appealing solution that tackles both food waste and electronics waste.

    Fruit peels such as those from an orange can be used to extract precious metals from lithium-ion batteries to create new ones. The research was recently published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.

    The "waste-to-research approach" assists in "supporting the development of a circular economy with zero waste, in which resources are kept in use for as long as possible," the scientists say.

    Current processes involve heating spent batteries to extreme temperatures or pose health and safety risks that are too high to be worth the effort. The scientists from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore were driven to discover new alternatives as the country is known for being resource-scarce.
