It's an admission that it's diversity and inclusion policy isn't working. BHP is flogging off its most diverse BMC mines. BHP is so diverse it is struggling to compete in the PCI and thermal segments. Their Peak Downs, Saraji, Caval, Blackwater and Goonside operations are still quite viable due to the size of the deposits, the coking properties of the coal and the difficulty in making a costly mistake at these operations. While Daunia makes PCI, it is relatively new, has a lower strip ratio and lower maintenance costs. Long term BHP coal is going to be smashed in 15-25 years when the competition opens the low strip ratio Olive Downs and Winchester South prospects.
