Lol Volt, what a terrible tale of woe... ye gads, certainly being smacked by MR Murphy.

Dontcha just hate it when you pay a professional to do some work, and then when you check it you find they have made mistakes that an apprentice could see. I have had my steering ruined on my car because of a mechanic shop that took the steering rack out and put it in wrong, stupidly at the time, I didn't have the self confidence to tell tehm where they went wrong, and had to wear the cost when they "fixed" it again, sigh.

Still we do tend to only remember the bad things and i have had many fantastic jobs done by mechanics that have been so good , I foget them.

Regarding the computer thing, I have the fortune to be an old school hardware hacker, with some operating system hacking backup.

It is not impossible that we could set you up with a very robust older machine with a robust older version of windows or similar operating system that we could keep alive for many years to come which would enable you to run your charting software 'til we are both in the grave.

Not necessarily the best solution, but perhaps a workable one, cheap and easy.

Eg at the moment I am sorting out a compaq PIII of which I have two, incredibly strong and well built, and available enough so that I can pirate parts if things fail, and these things are good enough for me to run them as storage units and dedicated movie players/entertainment systems. Yet these and similar units are being thrown out or can be picked up for a song.

    Worth a thought.

as an aside, even though we know each others e-mail address, I have never contacted you outright due to respect for your privacy.

I'd be rapt were you to drop me anytime, my anonymous e-mail is in my sig.

    ;)
